Solution. #2. Welcome to the forums, newcomer! When performing a ram upgrade on any platform be it a desktop or a laptop, you're advised to upgrade with an identical stick of ram if you want to add ram. Otherwise you're advised to look into a dual channel ram kit. Short answer, don't mix and match! 1. The fact that 4 - 8GB RAM modules WOULD NOT work in the R7 was finally acknowledged by both Alienware Tech Support and their Engineering team. Oddly, according to them 3 - 8GB modules would work, but 4 absolutely would not. They never answered the "why" question. So, can you mix and match 2 - 8GB and 2 - 16GB modules? Maybe, but most likely not.
Jun 15, 2020. #3. As with any other computer. Mixing RAM has the potential of not working, working at lower than advertised speeds, breaking dual channel and so forth. Although it is pretty minimal if you get the same manufacturer, speed and timings as is currently in there. As Apple's RAM will follow JEDEC standards not something using XMP

It's generally not recommended to mix and match ram but from what I understand if it runs at the same speed and timings it shouldn't cause a problem. 48gb is a lot of ram though. If you don't need the full amount but 16gb isn't enough for your use case you may be better off just getting the 2x16gb kit and using it by itself.
So, if you have 8GB + 16GB sticks in dual channel pair, then you have 2*8GB working in dual channel and 8GB working in single channel. BTW, this doesn't apply to the other dual channel pair. You can have 8+8 and 16+16 in 4 slots, that rule only applies to one dual channel pair. Never heard of mixing ram sizes and achieving dual channel. Site a source cause this clearly isnt common knowledge. If the 2GB have the same speed, then you will get dual channel for parts of your RAM (so for 4 GB). I would still recommend getting an identical 8 GB stick instead. It's not a must-have, though.

Common RAM Misconceptions You canโ€™t mix RAM sizes. The majority of the laptops out there are built with at least two RAM slots or more. However, the more modern motherboards have four RAM slots. There is this misconception that you canโ€™t use a mixture of RAM sizes like combining a 4GB and an 8GB simultaneously or going as far as mixing RAM

Solution. #3. Yes, but be careful. HP limits exactly which RAM modules you can use in their BIOS, so you will probably find the cheapest of the cheap RAM modules don't actually work in it. HP used Crucial memory in their laptops when they were making the G6, so any Crucial module is likely to work perfectly. Pro is you got 4GB of RAM more and you somewhat benefit of dual-channel. Con is that only 8GB of your total memory will run in dual-channel speed. The last 4GB will only operate at single-channel speed. This can lead to performance loss if you reach more than 8GB of RAM used. Yes its safe and fine. The memory will also continue to run in dual channel mode as long as the matched sticks are in the correct memory slots. Sounds like your current ram is set up in dual channel mode so install the new ram in the open slots. Fishes39. OP โ€ข 4 yr. ago. .
